New vs Used Atlas Copco Air Compressors: A Buyer’s Checklist

A good second-hand Atlas Copco compressor can save you a large share of the cost of new. A bad one can cost you more in downtime and repairs than you saved. The difference is knowing what to inspect before you buy. Here is a practical checklist for choosing between new and used.

When buying new makes sense

• You need a warranty and guaranteed lifespan for critical, non-stop production.
• You want the latest energy efficiency — a modern variable-speed unit often pays back its price gap in energy savings within 1–2 years.
• You need a specific configuration (voltage, dryer, controller) built to order.

When used / second-hand makes sense

• You need a spare or back-up machine that won’t run continuously.
• Your budget is tight and cash flow matters more than a warranty.
• You need a unit quickly and a suitable model is in stock.

What to check on a used unit

Before you commit to any second-hand compressor, verify the following:

• Running hours: ask for the actual hours on the controller. Under ~20,000 hours is generally low; 40,000+ means major service is due soon.
• Serial number & age: confirm the serial number, build year and that it is a genuine Atlas Copco unit (not a rebuild with mixed parts).
• Airend condition: the screw element is the heart of the machine and the most expensive part to replace. Ask for a load test and, ideally, an oil analysis.
• Service history: a documented maintenance record is worth paying extra for.
• Load run & test report: insist the unit is started, run under load, and that pressure, temperature and current draw are recorded.
• Leaks & corrosion: check for oil leaks, cooler condition and rust on the frame and receiver.

Questions to ask the seller

• Can you provide the serial number, working hours and photos before I pay?
• Has it been professionally inspected, cleaned, serviced and load-run?
• What is included — dryer, filters, controller, documentation?
• What condition are the wear parts (elements, bearings, valves) in?

Red flags — walk away if…

• The seller won’t share the serial number or real running hours.
• There is no test report and no offer to load-run the machine.
• The price is far below market with no explanation.
• The unit is “rebuilt” with non-genuine or mixed parts.
